Community Murals

Welcome to Burr Oak

The Jewell County Community Foundation granted funding to hire artist Callum McNichols, son of Burr Oak residents, for this project. A colorful statement to catch the eye of townspeople and travelers, it is  positioned on the main stretch of  Highway 128 through Burr Oak.

150 Years

McNichols also completed the 150 Years mural inside of Burr Oak Community Center. Created in honor of the 150th anniversary of Burr Oak, this piece celebrates multiple aspects of its history. It chronicles the history of the area from the indigenous people of the past to the residents of the modern day. The colors of the piece are based on the recognizable palette of a Kansas sunset.

Ad Astra

Also painted by McNichols, this mural is an adaptation of the Pawnee warrior atop the Topeka capitol to celebrate the history of the area. Easily visible from Highway 36, the two-story painting is perfect to punctuate the journey of any traveler.
